Biz Expo
Is Branding Opportunity
Creating a forum to assist businesses in getting acquainted with their
markets, competitors, consumers and with each other was the idea behind Biz
to Biz Networking business expos Harry Baum, founder and president,
launched several years ago.
In addition to on-going networking business card exchanges and events, Biz to
Biz hosts seasonal business expos as a way for local businesses to showcase
their wares. The next one, the 2011 Winter Business Expo, Tuesday,
January 18th at the Sheraton Hotel in Fort Lauderdale.
As attendees peruse tabletops and booths, and as businesses pitch their products
and services they're essentially networking with the business community and
forging new co-marketing relationships, said Baum.
"Exhibitors make personal connections and have face to face time with potential
clients." Typically, Baum said about 100 exhibitors participate on average. They
represent a variety of industries such as in real estate, computer software,
printing, investment banking and photography. Exhibitors pay from $125 up to
$200 to exhibit, or more for sponsorships.
About 1,000 people attend any one of Baum's seasonal expos in Broward or Palm
Beach counties. Baum estimates that about 90 percent of the attendees are in
business for themselves or work for a company. Admission is free to the public.
In his job organizing networking and expo events, Baum also becomes a business
coach of sorts.
He tells exhibitors to be realistic. "Don't expect to sell a printer that day or
get someone to make a major decision after visiting your table," he cautions. On
the other hand, that conversation develops brand recognition that can grow into
a relationship, says Baum.
Baum provides guidance on set ups but sees that most exhibitors are quick
studies. "With each show they become more proficient," he said. Exhibitors
customize their space with logoed tablecloths, signage, take-a-ways and business
cards.
Baum advises exhibitors to get contact information from attendees that visit
their table even if it's just a business card. "Following up to say thank you
for stopping by is important," said Baum.
Don't make things more complicated, said Baum. "The idea is to just keep it
simple, and whatever works, works."
